How Much a Living Wall Costs?

One of the first questions our potential clients usually ask is, “How much does a living wall cost?” Answer: the cost of a living wall is calculated based on square feet, plus on a variety of factors. Let’s take a look at what affects the cost of a living wall so you can get a better understanding of how we price projects and what you might pay.

Size of Installation

The number one factor that affects pricing is the size of the installation. The bigger the installation, the larger the cost. It really is that simple. In the business, we typically price based on the square foot of the installation. The average price can range from $100 to $225 per square foot of wall.

Type of Frame

Many living walls are designed within a beautiful and bold frame. At TrueVert, we can add a variety of different frames to a living wall, including wooden frames and certain metal frames. We can also stain and/or paint the frames to get just the look the client desires. Different frames cost different amounts. For example, a Redwood frame is more expensive than an aluminum frame.

Also, the size of the installation will come into play again. The bigger the installation, the more frame you’ll need to buy!

Plants

Another factor in the cost of your living wall is the plants you choose for the installation. If you go to any plant nursery, you’ll quickly discover that the prices of different plants can vary by a wide margin. At TrueVert, we offer our clients many different plant choices, which means your cost will change depending on which plants you choose. Keep in mind, larger installations require more plants, so the cost between lower-priced and higher-priced plants will be starker for larger installations.

Care and Upkeep Services

The final cost consideration to be aware of isn’t so much about the price tag of the installation itself, but rather the price of upkeep. Depending on your preference, you may either want to hire a company to care for your living wall or perform the upkeep yourself. Either way, you will pay with your money or your time, which has its own value. At TrueVert, we offer ongoing upkeep services for all of our installations for a reasonable rate.

How to Save Money on a Living Wall

In some situations, a potential client comes to us with a grand idea for a massive living wall only to suffer sticker shock when we offer a bid. Again, the biggest pricing factor is the size of the installation! These potential clients then ask us how they can save money on their living wall project.

You probably won’t be surprised by what we tell them. The best way to save money on your living wall is to shrink the size of the wall. You don’t want to cut corners on the design of the wall or it will look bad, which would eliminate the entire purpose of the project.

Instead, we like to point out to clients that smaller installations can still look amazing. One option for those on a budget is to invest in smaller living wall frames that can be artistically hung on a wall. This will still create the compelling look of a living wall with a much friendlier price tag.
