From dense tropical arrangements to preserved moss art and desert-inspired succulents, living walls can be as different and diverse as the people who commission them. But when it comes to crafting and maintaining these stunning installations, choosing the right vertical wall garden plants for your needs is the ultimate key to success.
While you might prefer one look over the other, there are many factors to consider when selecting the optimal greenery for your space. Growing tolerance, site conditions and lighting all play a part in making the perfect plant selection. Preserved moss, for example, does exceptionally well indoors since it doesn’t require sunlight. Succulent walls, on the other hand, tend to thrive in warmer locations with adequate lighting.

Tropical Plants
Lush, leafy and vibrant, tropical plants can truly make a statement in your living wall installation. Relatively easy to maintain and grow indoors or out, tropical species generally like wet soil and humidity. In their natural habitat, they are often shaded by larger trees in the rainforest — this makes them well-suited to life as vertical wall garden plants since they are adaptable to different lighting conditions. Some of our favorites include ferns, philodendrons and palm plants.
Preserved Moss
Preserved moss is the easiest of the vertical wall garden plants to care for because, well, it’s preserved! This also makes it an ideal option for indoor designs, since it doesn’t require sunlight to survive. Our moss at TrueVert® has been grown, harvested and preserved using a 100-percent, plant-based biodegradable preservation formula resulting in a soft, realistic feel. There are several types of preserved moss, including: mood moss, reindeer moss and sheet moss. Frequently used in moss wall art, mood moss is about three to four inches thick and breaks apart cleanly. Reindeer moss is unique in that it is actually a soft lichen and is available in multiple colors. When broken apart, it looks like small shrubs without leaves. Sheet Moss has the appearance of tiny ferns and is about half an inch thick. It can be cut with scissors or torn apart to create any shape.

Succulents
Succulents are plants defined by their ability to store water in their fleshy, thick leaves and stems, making them relatively easy to care for. They require little maintenance and moderate sunlight to thrive as vertical wall garden plants. When it comes to living succulent walls, they are generally made up of modular panels that allow for customizable sizes and easy replacement of individual plants. Each panel contains a small irrigation tank at the top, along with a tray at the bottom that’s designed to hold water and retain nutrients. Panels can also be designed to attach drip lines for easy outdoor maintenance.
